The CNAOL and the National Institut of Origin and Quality have put online the key figures for the PDO and IGP sectors.
There is a lot to read and learn about the situation for these sectors, as well as changes in consumption patterns, in the 12-pages study published by the two institutions. It begins with a set of key figures to give a better idea of what is really behind the PDO and IGP labels.

Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) cover...

  • 46 cheeses for a commercialised volume of 201,
  • 176 tons in 2023 (-3% compared to 2022) and a turnover of 2.38 billion euros,
  • 3 butters for a commercialised volume of 28,661 tons in 2023 ( -26% compared to 2022) and a turnover of 242 million euros,
  • 2 creams for a commercialised volume of 7,861 tons in 2023 (-3% compared to 2022) and a turnover of 43 million euros.


The PDO chain accounts for 11% of the cow's milk collected in France, 11% of goat's milk and 33% of ewe's milk.

  • A total volume of 32,606 tons for a turnover of 339 million euros.
